If ever there was a party drink, it’s sangria – a sort of punch made with red wine, fruit, brandy or other spirits, sweeteners and mixers like soda water or other fizzy drinks to give it a sparkling finish.
The name comes from the Spanish word sangre meaning blood (because of its colour), but it can be made with white wine when, illogically, it is known as sangria blanca. The ingredients are mixed and left to chill for several hours or even overnight to allow the fruits – oranges, lemons, apples, peaches and berries, for instance – to infuse the wine with their juices. It’s usually served very cold, often with ice, in a large glass or pitcher.
Typically, the Spanish enjoy sangria at social gatherings and festive occasions (it’s not a tipple for the solitary drinker). And it is really popular during the hot summer months, often served at festivals and parties, barbecues and picnics. It’s a staple of many tapas bars and restaurants and a popular choice to accompany tapas.
A drink that packs a punch
Originating from the Iberian peninsula, sangria is popular worldwide – especially in warm climates.
Two things to watch out for though: alcohol content can vary considerably, and calories can be through the roof because of the sweeteners and mixers. On the upside, there are vital vitamins in the fruit.
