Places to eat close to Buckingham Palace

They say that Buckingham Palace is the most famous palace in the world. Certainly, it’s big – with 775 rooms and the largest private garden in London at 39 acres, including a lake and a helicopter pad.

It began life as a mere house – built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham – and was bought by King George III in 1761as a private residence for Queen Charlotte. It was expanded by George IV and became a proper royal palace when Queen Victoria moved in on her accession to the throne in 1837. The current, and very familiar, façade was redesigned by Sir Aston

Palace tour and tapas

Today, there are 19 state rooms, 52 royal and guest rooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 78 bathrooms and 92 offices. And, amazingly, the palace is open to the public.

The guided tours make most sense – otherwise you’ll miss out on the stories and anecdotes that bring the building to life. The standard guided tour covers the palace’s main attractions – the 19 State Rooms, the Throne Room and the picture gallery.

For a more intimate experience, think about taking an evening tour – after the palace has closed to the public. Garden tours and a family tour – designed with kids in mind – are also on offer.

And when you’re ready for refreshment, El Pirata – Mayfair’s family-friendly Spanish mediterranean tapas bar – is just a short walk away across Green Park and Piccadilly, at the top end of Down Street.
